A Theory of Human Motivation
I am attending a Bootcamp provided by “Gojek” duration of 3 weeks. this Bootcamp is for “Core Engineering”. Before joining Bootcamp I was assuming this Bootcamp will be focused mainly on different problem statements which will cover all best practices and topics which will be needed by the company.
My Assumption was wrong..!
The Bootcamp is so well designed with technical pair programming sessions and philosophical brainstorming discussion. In Bootcamp on very first day coaches told us-
“ This is not competitive exam or academy course — You have to learn as a group and one failed means group failed..! “
This sentences itself give kick-ass start to think as a Team. In a philosophical discussion, we learn about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The following list them all:
Physiological needs:
Physiological needs are the physical requirements for human survival. example — water, food, clothing, shelter. If these requirements not met, the human body cannot function and will ultimately fail.
Safety needs :
Once a person’s physiological needs are relatively satisfied, their safety needs to take precedence and dominate behavior. Safety and Security needs include:
Love/Belonging needs :
After physiological and safety needs are fulfilled, the third level of human needs is interpersonal and involves feelings of belongingness. This need is especially strong in childhood and it can override the need for safety as witnessed in children who cling to abusive parents. Social Belonging needs include:
Esteem:
Esteem needs are ego needs or status needs to develop a concern with getting recognition, status, importance, and respect from others. All humans have a need to feel respected;
This includes the need to have self-esteem and self-respect.
Self-actualization:
“What a man can be, he must be.”
Maslow describes this level as the desire to accomplish everything that one can, to become the most that one can be.
Individuals may perceive or focus on this need very specifically.
Example:- one individual may have a strong desire to become an ideal parent. In another, It may be expressed in paintings, pictures, or inventions.
As previously mentioned, Maslow believed that to understand this level of need — the person must not only achieve the previous needs but master them.
Few Characteristics of Self actual persons are:-
- They accept themselves, together with all their flaws.
- They prioritize and enjoy the journey, not just the destination.
- While they are inherently unconventional, they do not seek to shock or disturb.
- They are motivated by growth, not by the satisfaction of needs.
The conclusion is:-
once you achieve basic needs, you should be more focused towards Self Actualisation. It will help you to achieve your true potential as an individual :)
